It’s been a long seven months but the NFL is finally kicking off its 2024 regular season by revisiting the AFC Championship matchup from last year’s playoffs with the Baltimore Ravens traveling to Missouri to take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
While it seems logical to have playoff teams revisiting their matchups in this exciting opening game, it’s only the third time in the previous 20 seasons that the two teams from last season’s conference championships have faced off in the opener. The last time this happened was in 2010, so we should be in for quite a treat.
As a two-time defending champ, the Chiefs open the NFL season for the second year in a row, and after falling to the Detroit Lions in 2023, Kansas City is hoping for a different result against Baltimore.
While the Ravens and Chiefs are established Super Bowl contenders, they also feature the two most recent NFL MVPs in Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson (2023 and 2019) and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (2022 and 2018). Not only are they the two most recent MVP winners, but outside of Aaron Rodgers, they are also the only MVP winners still active in the NFL.
Betting line and pick for the game
Kansas City is the favorite in this game and the folks over at FanDuel Sportsbook have set the betting line at Chiefs -3.
While the AFC Championship was a low-scoring affair, I’m expecting a bit more offense in this game. In the past 10 seasons, Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid is 9-1 in season openers, so I’m playing it safe early in the season and picking the Chiefs to win (and cover) this close matchup. Prediction: Chiefs 24, Ravens 20.
