Minor League Report: Arjun Nimmala and Alan Roden named Players of the Month

The race for a playoff spot is coming down to the wire.

On Wednesday, three of the four teams were in action, as the Dunedin Blue Jays’ game was postponed. However, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats played in a doubleheader, with the three teams going 2-2.

Let’s dig into that in the latest Minor League Report!

Buffalo gave up five runs in an inning

It was a big inning that sunk the Buffalo Bisons, as they fell 5-4 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs thanks to a five-run, fourth inning for the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate (what a tongue twister that is). With that being said, the Bisons’ second-half record sits at 23-36.

Alan Roden hit his 12th double in Triple-A, while Riley Tirotta and Nick Raposo each hit a double in this game. Raposo had a multi-hit game, as did Steward Berroa who had two singles in the game. Damiano Palmegiani had the team’s other single.

Easton Lucas made the start for the Bisons, finishing three innings with four strikeouts and a walk. José Cuas allowed five earned runs in two thirds of an inning and was designated for assignment on Thursday. Jimmy Burnette allowed a walk and struck out a batter in an inning and two thirds. Luis Frías struck out two in an inning and a third, and Luis Quiñones pitched a scoreless inning and a third.

New Hampshire swept the doubleheader

On Thursday, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats swept the doubleheader against the Portland Sea Dogs, winning game one 6-1 and game two 3-1. Their second-half record sits at 3-7, but they’re on a three-game win streak.

In the first game, Robert Brooks hit his second home run in Double-A and had a multi-hit game. Josh Rivera hit a double and also had a multi-hit game, while RJ Schreck, Ryan McCarty, Rainer Nuñez, and Devonte Brown each hit a single. Kevin Miranada pitched a complete game (seven innings), allowing just two hits, an earned run, and six strikeouts.

The second game saw more pitchers and fewer hits, but the Fisher Cats still won 3-1. Gabriel Martinez hit his 20th double of the season and had a multi-hit game, while Drew Jemison hit a double and Dasan Brown hit a single.

As for pitching, Dahian Santos started the game, pitching three innings while allowing a hit, a walk, and striking out three. Nick Fraze allowed the only run of the game, allowing a hit, a walk, and striking out a batter. Andrew Bechtold allowed a walk in a scoreless inning, while CJ Van Eyk struck out two in two innings of work for his first professional save.

Vancouver and Hillsboro both lost

The bad news is that the Vancouver Canadians fell 10-7 to the Eugene Emeralds. That’s okay though, as the Hillsboro Hops also suffered a defeat, meaning that with a Vancouver win or Hillsboro loss, the Canadians will punch their ticket to their third straight Northwest Championship Series.

Je’Von Ward hit his seventh home run of the season in this game. Moreover, Peyton Williams hit two doubles while Jay Harry, Brennan Orf, and Nick Goodwin each hit a double. Jace Bohrofen, Ward, Cutter Coffey, Orf, and Jacob Sharp all had two-hit games, while Williams and Harry had three hits in this game. With that being said, 17 hits should be enough to win a game.

It was a tough start for Juaron Watts-Brown, who gave up eight earned runs and five walks in four and one innings pitched. Moreover, he gave up four home runs while striking out six. Irv Carter pitched an inning and two thirds with two hits and a strikeout. Aaron Munson was the other Canadians’ pitcher to give up a run, as he allowed two earned runs in an inning pitched.

Chay Yeager walked four batters in an inning and a third, but survived without giving up a hit. J.J. Sanchez struck out both batters he faced.

Two Blue Jays’ prospects won the player of the month award

According to the Blue Jays’ Twitter account, Alan Roden won the International Player of the Month, while Arjun Nimmala the Florida State League Player of the Month.

After a rough start to his Triple-A career, Roden slashed .354/.411/.594 in the month of August, along with four home runs and a 158 wRC+. There’s a legitimate chance Roden could play in the big leagues at some point next season.

Nimmala also had a rough start to his season and was eventually sent to the Florida Complex League. However, he’s been one of the best prospects in the Jays system since then and slashed .296/.330/.541 with five home runs in 103 plate appearances for a 143 wRC+.
