The Seahawks begin a new era under Mike Macdonald with a home game versus a former AFC West rival.
The 2024 NFL regular season is here! For the Seattle Seahawks (0-0), it’s their first season under rookie head coach Mike Macdonald. The former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator has replaced Pete Carroll after 14 seasons, and his debut opponent will be against the team the Seahawks vanquished to win the Super Bowl: the Denver Broncos (0-0).
Obviously the Seahawks and Broncos have no one left from the 2013 season on the 2024 rosters, and they’re both well removed from their peak title contention days. Seattle narrowly missed the playoffs last season, whereas the Broncos made a late playoff push but still finished 8-9 in year one of the Sean Payton era. This could’ve been Russell Wilson’s second visit to Seattle as a member of the Broncos, but he was let go in the offseason and now Denver turns its hopes to rookie quarterback Bo Nix. The former Oregon star is the first Broncos rookie QB to start on opening day since John Elway in 1983. It’s a big opportunity for Nix in his return to the Pacific Northwest, and it’s a bigger opportunity for the Seahawks defense to get off to a good start against someone with no NFL experience.
It’s year three of Geno Smith as Seahawks starter, with Sam Howell as the backup instead of Drew Lock. Under first-year NFL offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, there is much anticipation that Seattle’s inconsistent offense can transform into something special. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is expected to take on a bigger role in his second season, while the addition of center Connor Williams should provide a little bit of belief that the offensive line won’t be a total disaster again.
Odds
FanDuel has the Seahawks as a 5.5-point favorite, with the over/under currently at 41.5 points.
