Ted’s Talk: Simulating the 2024 NFL season in Tecmo Super Bowl

Madden sims are overrated…retro sims are where it’s at!

In what I’m hoping will become a yearly tradition, it’s time to simulate the 2024 NFL season in the classic video game Tecmo Super Bowl for the Nintendo Entertainment System. As I explained last year, a group of dedicated fans are keeping the game alive with roster updates. The one used this time was created by SBlueman just like last year and featured rosters as of Aug. 8.

The same caveats also still apply in that since it’s just an update to the original game, there isn’t the ability to add the 17th regular season game nor the 7th Wild Card team. We’ll make do with what we have.

So, how did the season go for the Seattle Seahawks in Tecmo Super Bowl 2024?

Just like last year, the game is expecting a 9-7 record. However, that would only be good enough for 3rd in the division because the Rams and Cardinals had a freakin’ tie…which wouldn’t be the craziest thing to be honest. It’s certainly not a brave take to say that both the 9-7 record and 3rd place finish are a realistic scenario. I’m expecting the Seahawks to win 7-9 games this year even though I admit that they have the talent level to push double digits.

2024 Season Statistical Round-up

*Only players with notable stats are shown. Remember that this is only for a 16-game season.

Offense

Geno Smith – 134/225, 3,137 yards, 59.5% completion, 33 TD, 21 INT, 82.8 QB rating

Ken Walker III – 166 carries for 1,332 yards and 12 TD, 9 catches for 299 yards and 1 TD

Tyler Lockett – 36 catches for 846 yards, 7 TD

DK Metcalf – 35 catches for 846 yards, 8 TD

Jaxon Smith-Njigba – 34 catches for 664 yards, 13 TD

Noah Fant – 20 catches for 482 yards, 4 TD

The 23rd overall offense in the NFL in the first year under offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb? Would people be pining for the days of Shane Waldron? I think everyone would take the 33 TDs from Geno but definitely not those 21 INTs. He takes care of the ball too well for that to actually happen. K-9 having a breakout season would be awesome and that rushing yardage would be the most by a Seahawks RB since 2012 when Marshawn Lynch had 1,590 yards. Geno was definitely spreading the ball around for how close the reception totals are with the top 3 WRs. JSN had the least catches and yards but won out in a big way with 13 TDs! Even Fant got in on the action after being held out of the end zone in 2023.

Defense

Uchenna Nwosu – 14 sacks

Boye Mafe – 9 sacks

Jarran Reed – 7 sacks

Leonard Williams – 6 sacks

Byron Murphy – 4 sacks

Tyrel Dodson – 6 sacks, 1 INT

Jerome Baker – 7 INT, 2 TD

Riq Woolen – 1 INT

Devon Witherspoon – 4 sacks, 3 INT

Julian Love – 3 INT

Rayshawn Jenkins – 2 INT

At least the Seahawks didn’t finish near the bottom in total defense under Mike Macdonald. Nwosu’s sack total is likely a handful too high, but the other DL are pretty close to what I would expect. Dodson with 6 sacks and Baker with 7 INTs would be a Hell of a free agency coup for John Schneider at the LB position! The DBs production doesn’t seem too out of whack for the most part outside of hoping that Woolen can reel in more picks. Then again, if no one is throwing to his side it will be hard to get INTs.

Special Teams

Jason Myers – 12/13 FG, 47/48 XP

Michael Dickson – 5th in the NFL in average at 51.5 yards

2024 NFL Playoffs…according to Tecmo Super Bowl

After predicting a wild card berth for 2023, Tecmo Super Bowl 2024 has the Seahawks on the outside looking in this year. Besides the Chicago Bears winning the NFC North, there aren’t a ton of big surprises for playoff teams.

Last year, the predicted Super Bowl featured the Cleveland Browns taking down the Dallas Cowboys which clearly didn’t come to pass. Weirdly enough, though, Nick Chubb was injured so the game got that correct. What do we have this year?

For the 2nd year in a row, Tecmo Super Bowl likes a San Francisco vs. Dallas NFC Championship game and on the AFC side, it’s Buffalo vs. Kansas City.

Cowboys vs. Chiefs? *raspberry noise*

(Yawn)

The Chiefs complete the 3-peat which is something. Congratulations, I guess?

I didn’t try to influence the results at all so that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Still, it was fun to write this and hope to be back with another one for Tecmo Super Bowl 2025!
