The top slot corner gets his payday.
The Jets and slot cornerback Michael Carter II have reached an agreement on a three year contract extension. Carter had previously been set to become a free agent after the 2024 season upon the expiration of his rookie contract. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported the deal.
Carter and the Jets have agreed to terms on a three-year, $30.75 million extension that will make him the highest-paid slot corner in the league, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.
Carter’s extension carries a max value of $33 million with slightly more than $19 million in total guarantees, Pelissero added.
Carter has developed into one of the league’s top slot corners since the Jets drafted him in the fifth round in 2021, making him worthy of an extension.
Historically the Jets have seldom been proactive reaching new contracts ahead of time with important players. I’m not sure whether this is a one off situation or the start of a new philosophy, but I certainly hope it’s the latter.
