Oddsmakers don’t like the Jacksonville Jaguars’ chances to win its season opener in Miami on Sunday.
The Jacksonville Jaguars (0-0) will face the Miami Dolphins (0-0) at 1:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, September 8 in Week 1 of the 2024-25 NFL season.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Jaguars are 3-point underdogs against the Dolphins. The total is set at 50.5 points.
Despite the hype around Trevor Lawrence and Brian Thomas Jr., and the yet-unanswered question of who will call offensive plays, the side of the ball to watch will be Jacksonville’s defense against Miami’s offense.
Fins coach Mike McDaniel is an esteemed offensive mind whose speed-themed offense always has a new trick or two to start the season. Receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle haven’t been fully healthy in recent weeks but they figure to be ready for Week 1.
Meanwhile, new Jags defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen will also have some tricks up his sleeve. The base unit is transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and the defensive backs will play much more press coverage than years past. If those coverage players can disrupt Hill and Waddle’s routes at the line of scrimmage — thus throwing off timing concepts for Tua Tagovailoa — it will allow the front 7 to penetrate Miami’s porous offensive line.
