The former third overall pick has blossomed into one of the league’s top defensive tackles the last two years.

Through the summer, we will be counting down the Jets roster player by player. We continue the series by discussing Quinnen Williams.

Name: Quinnen Williams

Number: 95

Year With Jets: 6th

Projected Role: Superstar Defensive Tackle

What’s the reason for the disconnect? It might be that he was double teamed a lot. I know double teams are used frequently as an excuse for high profile defensive tackles who post less than gaudy numbers, but ESPN’s player tracking indicated he was double teamed on 70 percent of snaps in 2023 and still had the eighth best pass rush win rate among defensive tackles.

I’ll put it this way. When a 30 year old journeyman like Quinton Jefferson suddenly posts a career high in sacks, I would guess Williams’ ability to draw attention has something to do with it. The same might be said for Solomon Thomas reaching 5 sacks for the first time in a seven year career.

Even when Williams isn’t sacking the quarterback, he’s making the task easier for the guys around him. He’s also a heck of a run defender in the middle of the Jets defensive line.

2024 will be a success if: Williams sustains his level of play from the last two seasons. To put it bluntly, they need him to do so. The defensive tackle position is a strength with Williams playing at a high level. If you take Williams out of the equation, however, a group of Javon Kinlaw, Leki Fotu, Solomon Thomas, and company would likely rate among the league’s worst. It’s tough to overstate how big of a role Quinnen plays at making the Jets defense play at a high level.

I’ll add something else. In a world where signing Kinlaw to a relatively lucrative contract was part of a coherent plan, I would assume the hope is for him to breakout next to Williams as Jefferson did and perhaps let him walk in a year for a compensatory pick.

I know I’m not breaking ground here saying that Quinnen Williams is important. There are just a number of dimensions where his play can take the Jets to the next level.

Odds of making the roster: Lock (>99%)
