Breece Hall ranked #2 running back by NFL personnel

The Jets have an elite talent at running back

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about Pro Football Focus’ running back rankings for the 2024 season. In their rankings, New York Jets running back Breece Hall ranked 7th.

While justifiable, I thought that ranking was a bit low and noted as much. However, one ranking is not the end-all, be-all. ESPN recently released their own list of top running backs where Breece Hall ranked #2, which placed him behind only San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

Notable in that ranking difference is how ESPN came to their rankings, which is based on the rankings of 80 NFL personnel such as executives, scouts, and coaches, which further adds to the validity of the ranking. More specifically, the process was described by Jeremy Fowler, who authored the piece:

“Voters give us their best 10 players at a position, then we compile the results and rank candidates based on number of top-10 votes, composite average and dozens of interviews, with research and film-study help from ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen. In total, nearly 80 voters submitted a ballot on at least one position, and in many cases all positions. Additional voting and follow-up calls with those surveyed help us break any ties.”

Within their ranking of Hall as #2, Fowler noted Hall’s statistical output from last season. The specific quotes from voters also made note of Hall’s specific “home run” ability, with one executive saying the following:

“Legit dual-threat, a glider with high-level change of direction and vision. Home run hitter with the ball in his hands. Can grind volume, create explosives at any moment.”

What do you think? Is Hall’s ranking closer to 2 or to 7?
