The Rockies are riding a five-game skid into St. Louis

It was a painful ending to a tough series against the Cincinnati Reds for the Colorado Rockies, as they melted-down in the ninth on Wednesday — turning a 7-6 lead with three outs left into a 12-7 loss. The team has lost five straight games and will carry their negative momentum and NL worst 8-23 road record into a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals — the first of two road series against Central opponents.

The good news for the team is Cal Quantrill taking the ball tonight in game one. He’s been extremely solid in his first year with the Rockies, coming into the game with a 4-4 record and 3.84 ERA over 68 IP. His first start of June wasn’t great — nine hits and four runs allowed against the Los Angeles Dodgers over 4 13 innings — but Quantrill is still fresh off a tremendous May where he sported a 1.71 ERA and 4-0 record in five starts.

Opposing Quantrill will be veteran Sonny Gray, who is also in his first season with his club. The Cardinals are Gray’s fifth MLB stop in his 12-year career, signing this past off-season to a three-year, $70MM contract with a fourth-year team option for $30MM. After starting the season on the IL, Gray has shown the investment was initially worthwhile as he holds an even 3.00 ERA in ten starts, striking out 77 in 57 IP and a robust 137 ERA+.
