The 7 players the Browns owe dead money to in 2024

The Cleveland Browns owe over $15 million in dead money against the 2024 salary cap, and that’s largely due to two former starters in defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and safety John Johnson III.

The dead money attached to Clowney, who last suited up for the Browns in 2022, was by design as the team kicked a portion of his bonuses when he signed a one-year, $10 million extension, down the road to lower his base salary and cap hit. This makes sense to kick a chunk down the road as the salary cap continues to rise, that number will take up a lower percentage of the cap.

Johnson III, on the other hand, is due to a whiff in free agency. The former Pro Bowl safety was the top one on the market, and the Browns paid him like it, expecting him to come in and transform their defense. Instead, he floundered in two seasons under defensive coordinator Joe Woods, returned to the Los Angeles Rams last year, and is now looking for another place to call home in free agency.

Who else do the Browns owe dead money to in 2024? Here is the full list of seven players who are contributing to the total of $15.6 million in sunk cost.
